Dawson Books offer three different Out of Print acquisition options to suit your buying needs and workflows. We can search and order according to preference on price and condition.
Our dedicated research team will investigate a request to find the best match. Books are then serviced and catalogued as normal. It is a cost effective solution for acquiring, servicing and cataloguing Out of Print books.
OPen DIRECT – Open Direct is available on dawsonenter – either via the normal search screen – if a title is OP you have the option to link straight into the OP screen or by going directly into it and performing your search. We only use one source which is Alibris in the US. It is a live database and the books are on a “first come first served basis” – we are not exclusive to Alibris. We will inform you if we are unable to obtain the particular book – or to simply supply.
All you need to do is to either place your order via dawsonenter or EDI – for EDI we need the unique OP/AL number quoting in the vendor note. This reference is unique to the specific book you have chosen and also alerts us that is it an OP order. All books are serviced in the normal way and the same discount terms apply as regular books
OPen EXTRA – OPen Extra is where you outsource the searching of OP titles to Dawson. This is a service you opt into and we ask you to complete a profile form to capture your buying preferences – condition of book, price limits & duration of order.
When placing your order via EDI / dawsonenter we just ask for the code “OP/CL” to be quoted on the vendor notes. This alerts us that it is an OPen Extra order. We search for books globally, using Bookfinder using your profile to source the most suitable book.
There is a 22% charge for this service added to the cost to Dawson. No discount is available on these orders.
OPen EXTRA PLUS – This is exactly the same as OPen Extra, the only difference is how the order reaches us. For OPen Extra these orders are sent from the Library – in most cases from previous OP reports we have sent from normal orders. OPen Extra Plus works by us intercepting the OP reports and automatically transferring them over to the OP service. An email is sent to advise of the orders that have been moved to OPen Extra Plus.
• Dawson takes care of payments – saving the Library time with payments on-line and credit card statements. We will send a regular Dawson invoice
• One stop shop – fully integrated with print and ebook acquisitions – EDI / dawsonenter
• Books can be processed for the Library – covers, stamps, etc.
• Experienced team handling the full process
• If we are unable to source a book matching your criteria/price we will email you direct to offer a suitable alternative
” Using the Out of Print service offered by Dawson Books has helped us streamline the Out of Print ordering process in our library. The service allows all members of the acquisitions team to be involved in ordering and has reduced staff time on corporate credit card administration. Before using the service around about 20% of all our orders were made on the corporate credit card.
Since we started using the service in March 2016 we have reduced this to an average of 14% or so. When we started using the service we anticipated a rise in the cost of the books supplied. However, the average cost of books supplied by Dawson was £38.48 (including shelf ready costs) whereas the average cost of an order placed with an online retailer was £47.10 (not including shelf ready processing).
We have received good support from the Out of Print team, receive regular communications about orders, and are very happy with the service.”
